Open Palm Zendo: A Zen Meditation Group
Every Saturday morning at 9:30 to 11 am.
With Pilar Teishin G. Dea, priest in the Soto Zen Buddhist tradition.
Participants will sit zazen (a Zen Buddhist style of silent meditation) for one period of 30 minutes, followed by kinhin (walking meditation) for 10 minutes, followed by another period of zazen, and closing with a recitation of The Heart Sutra. Please wear comfortable, subdued clothing and enter quietly at the beginning of each period only. Zazen instruction is offered at 9:20 am.; second period zazen may be offered out-of-doors, weather permitting.
Zen is simply the Japanese word for the Buddhist Sanskrit word dhyana, or “meditation”. Soto Zen, which began with 13th century founder Dogen Zenji, places particular focus on the practice of sitting meditation.
