Indoor Aquatic Center Groundbreaking
Elbee Foote - Staff Reporter

The Calvert County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) broke ground today on the County’s first indoor aquatic center located in Prince Frederick. The facility is expected to open in the spring of 2010.

“Providing the indoor Aquatic Center to our citizens plays a vital role in complementing future public recreation needs in Calvert County,” said Wilson H. Parran president, BOCC. “This provides Calvert County with an exciting opportunity to expand leisure programs for population segments currently underserved by County recreational programs such as children and senior citizens,” Parran said. “For the first time in the County’s history our high school swim teams will be able to host swim meets and practice close to home versus driving out-of-County for practice, children can take swim lessons over the winter and organizations such as Calvert Memorial Hospital could expand program offerings currently difficult to access by a majority of our residents.”

Upon completion, the Aquatic Center will be open to the public for recreational swimming and will offer a full menu of programs and amenities including a 50-meter lap pool, mezzanine seating for spectators, a therapy pool and leisure pool complete with children’s recreational activities, a spa, exercise room, locker rooms and meeting rooms. Year-round lap swimming, swimming instruction, aquatic competition, exercise classes, and training will be available.

The 41,152 square foot Aquatic Center is located on a 29-acre parcel on Auto Drive and North Prince Frederick Boulevard in Prince Frederick and was designed by Almy Pool Architects of Severna Park, Md. Total project cost is estimated to be $19.8 million with approximately $3 million allocated from Maryland Program Open Space (POS) grant funds; the POS grants funds were used to offset land acquisition costs. The addition of the indoor Aquatic Center helps meet a major goal of the BOCC to provide a year-round facility in a central, mid-County location.

The indoor Aquatic Center adds a third aquatic facility, joining Cove Point Pool in Lusby, and King’s Landing Pool in Huntingtown.
