Roll-over crash leaves driver in grave condition
Press release - Calvert Investigative Team
PRINCE FREDERICK, MD - On July 1, 2009 at approximately 01:40 a.m. members of the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division and Crash Reconstruction Team (CRT) responded to the area of Sandy Point Road and Sixes Road in Prince Frederick for a report of a motor vehicle crash.

The following was determined during a preliminary investigation, that a black 1997 Mazda Protégé 4-door sedan, operated by Jason Louis Copsey, 29 year old male, resident of St. Leonard, was traveling west bound on Sandy Point Road in the area of Sixes Road. The vehicle was also occupied by Heather Lynne Hutchins, 38 year old female, resident of Prince Frederick. Hutchins was seated in the front passenger seat of the vehicle.

As the vehicle entered a sweeping right turn in the roadway, the operator, Copsey, failed to negotiate the turn and the vehicle left the roadway from the south edge (east bound lanes) of Sandy Point Road. The vehicle struck a tree causing it to roll over a minimum of two times. Copsey was not wearing a seatbelt and was partially ejected during the crash. As a result of the severity of the crash, Copsey sustained life threatening injuries and was transported to Prince Georges County Shock Trauma by MSP Trooper 7. At the time of this press release, Copsey remains in grave condition.

Hutchins was transported to Calvert Memorial Hospital by Ambulance 48 with minor injuries.

Initial investigation revealed that alcohol was present and a factor that contributed to this crash.

DFC Carl Fischer of the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Team (CRT) is conducting a complete investigation into the events that lead up to the collision.
