Sheriff warns public of credit card scam
Press release - Calvert Sheriffs Office
PRINCE FREDERICK, MD - Calvert County Sheriff,  Mike Evans, would like to make the public aware of an ongoing scam being investigated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that is targeting random victims.

Individuals posing as special agents from the FDA, specifically, Special Agent Barbara Riggs, ID # 2177, are attempting to extort money from citizens. Citizens are receiving telephone calls advising that they are under investigation by the FDA for various crimes. The callers then attempt to acquire a credit card number from the victim to pay for pre-trial fees. If the victim refuses to provide credit card information, the caller threatens to contact local law enforcement and have the victim extradited to the Dominican Republic. In some instances the callers have threatened to have the victims children placed in foster care until the matter is resolved. The telephone number citizens are receiving these calls from is 209-207-6099.

Sheriff’s Office staff has contacted the FDA and verified that this is a scam that the FDA is currently investigating. Anyone receiving these types of phone calls should contact the Food and Drug Administration Investigations Section at 1-800-521-5783.

Sounds like a pretty stupid scam. Not too many people are going to believe the Food & Drug Administration can have US Citizens deported to the Dominican Republic or have kids put in Foster homes. Then again, these days, sometimes its hard to tell....
