CSM Lady Hawks Defeat Baltimore
College of Southern Maryland
December 12, 2006 - The CSM women's basketball team overcame a slow start, and after trailing at halftime, outscored Baltimore 45-16 in the second half to come away with a 69-41 win. As has been the case all season, the Hawks got off to a slow start in the first half. The lead changed hands several times in the early going, with Brittany Vines hitting a three pointer to give the Hawks a 10-9 lead with 12:19 to play. The Panthers quickly scored to reclaim the lead, but Ashley Driggins scored from inside to retake the lead for the Hawks, 12-11, with 12:11 left in the half. That would be the last basket scored by either team for almost four minutes, as sloppy play predominated, and both squads struggled with their shooting. A free throw by Sharmain Robin ended the drought with 8:14 left in the half, giving CSM a 13-11 lead, but the Hawks then went another two minutes without a point, and falling behind 17-13. The Panthers biggest lead of the half was five, 22-17, with 4:02 left, before CSM narrowed the gap to 25-24 at halftime. In the second half it was all Hawks, as CSM (4-4, 2-1) outscored Baltimore 25-2 to open the second half and never looked back. CSM used a suffocating defense to cause numerous turnovers, and created an up-tempo game by pushing the ball up court to pull away from the overmatched Panthers. Brittany Vines led all scorers with 18 points, and Shannon Wilson and Christina Simms each added 10 points for the Hawks. Sarah Perry led the Panthers (1-9) with 12 points, and Shanita Alston had 10 points. The Hawks will return to action this weekend in the CSM Christmas Classic. Friday, they will play Technical Institute of NY at 5:00 PM, and Saturday they take on Chesapeake at 4:00 PM. Overall there will be four games each day, with the CSM men playing at 7:00 PM on Friday, and 6:00 PM on Saturday.
