CHESPAX offers workshop on using native plants
Gail Hoerauf-Bennett - Calvert County Public Schools
Our backyards, forests and fields are being invaded! Exotic plant species, from all corners of the earth have been brought into Maryland, often arriving here with a disastrous result. Numbers of Maryland’s native plants, many of them quite beautiful, are being choked out by these alien invaders as they spread out onto our natural and cultivated landscapes. This invasion not only impacts our native plants, but the many wildlife species that rely on them for food and shelter.

As we prepare our gardening plans for the coming spring, it will be useful to learn how to identify and remove those undesirable exotics and replace them with some beautiful Maryland natives! Join us as Liz Stoffel from the American Chestnut Land Trust, presents a workshop that will provide an insight on the exotic and invasive species living in the backyards and schoolyards of Calvert County. In addition, an important feature of the program will be on the use of native plant species that are part of the natural landscape of the Chesapeake Bay region.

The workshop will be held on Thursday, February 21, 2008 from 4:30-6:30 pm at the Calvert Country School in Prince Frederick. This workshop series is designed for community members, teachers, and students and will help to explain how citizens can have a positive impact on the health of the Bay. Workshops are free of charge and open to the public. For more information or to sign up for the workshop, contact Michelle Daubon at the CHESPAX office at (410)-535-2960 or through e-mail at daubonm@calvertnet.k12.md.us
