Southern MD Regional Library Assn. - Press release
More than 400 videos (including hundreds of Hollywood favorites) are now available free online through public libraries in the tri-county area. A valid library card from any public library in Southern Maryland and a broadband internet connection are all that is required to download movies and videos 24/7.
To help showcase this new service, the public library systems in Calvert, Charles and St. Mary's County will be giving away free bags of popcorn to all library visitors on Saturday, March 15.
The product, called MyLibraryDV, features hundreds of popular contemporary and classic movies. It also offers many how-to; travel; food; health; literature; children's; and documentary videos with new programming added every week. The Southern Maryland Regional Library Assoc. (SMRLA) is sponsoring MyLibraryDV, providing free public access through local libraries on the COSMOS Web site.
"We strongly believe that the citizens of Southern Maryland should have equal access to information," explained Sharan Marshall, SMRLA director. "This is just one more example of how SMRLA can efficiently and effectively provide resources to be shared among the public libraries in our region."
MyLibraryDV features Hollywood movie favorites like "Black Hawk Down," "The Exorcist," "The Cable Guy," "Men in Black" and "Karate Kid." Classic movies such as "Ben-Hur," "Cool Hand Luke" and "Singin' in the Rain" are also available. Downloadable video series include "Antiques Roadshow," "Goble Trekker," "America's Test Kitchen," "Health Choices," "Inside the Law" and a variety of kids entertaining and educational programs.
"Libraries have become the community center not only for gathering information, but for cultural experience and networking," said Marshall. "It only makes sense for us to identify new learning opportunities and technology trends and make them available to the public."
With broadband internet (DSL, cable, etc.), and a valid library card downloading a video or movie is easy, according to Marshall. A link to COSMOS can be found on each library's home page. Click on COSMOS and go to "downloadable materials" for the MyLibraryDV start button. "The software automatically alerts you to any needed upgrades and will walk you through installation," she said.
The Southern Maryland Regional Library Association (SMRLA) provides public access to free online databases through the COSMOS Website which is available on the following library Websites:
Calvert Library
Carles County Public Library
St. Mary's County Library
MyLibraryDV can also be accessed directly at: http://cosmos.somd.lib.md.us. For more information about MyLibraryDV and other library services, visit or contact your local library.
