Traffic Improvement on Route 4
Evan Slaughenhoupt - President, DACCA

SHA plans to channel east bound Briscoes Turn Road traffic southbound to prevent one dangerous crossover of Route 4 south- and north-bound traffic. This part of the plan is sound as it will permit traffic to continue flowing while preventing some traffic from crossing Route 4.

Reducing dangerous conditions without impeding traffic flow can and should be the objective. While one might react emotionally to tragic deaths by calling for traffic lights, installing full color traffic signals fails to achieve this two part objective.

Traffic lights won’t correct the root cause of the danger. Crossover traffic at traffic light intersections can still be subject to horrific accidents. Traffic lights also impede the traffic flow which then causes a ripple affect decreasing safety elsewhere on the road.

Unfortunately, the SHA plan still permits one dangerous crossover of west bound traffic of Route 4 north- and south-bound from Skinners Turn Road.

The optimum solution calls for also constructing “channeling” at Skinners Turn Road. Most importantly, this solution should include removing that surface-grade crossover (that surfaced area in the median strip).

Well, the "upgrade" has only created a new way to get hurt - people going around the "island", heading northbound in the southbound lane to get to Skinners Turn Road.....now what?

It does NOTHING to prevent traffic from crossing the southbound lanes from Briscoes Turn Road....try again state traffic people!

As someone who live's off of Briscoe's, and has to comply with this rediculous new traffic pattern. I feel that this "fix" has endangered myself, my wife and everyone else trying to get on Northbound Rt. 4. from Briscoe's. We have to race to go southbound because of the blind hill approaching us and race North from our new turn around because of another blind hill. This is now unsafe for everyone! Traffic,on Rt.4, is moving very fast and in some cases presents a very real possibility for rear end collision's. There is no merge area so we have to start from a stopped position. I know that this was reaction to the traffic accident which killed those teen's. I'm sorry for those family's loses. But the county is now endandering everyone else. This is a knee jerk reaction without any thought or planning. If that intersection is so dangerous, than put in Traffic light. At the very least, give us a merge area.

SHA did not complete the job as they should have to include improved acceleration and deceleration lanes. Unfortunately, the current Board of County Commissioners do not support the correct solution I recommended.

What ever happen to the big intersection and Bridge improvement plan that was to be built at Rt 4 and Rt 231? All they seem to be doing is wideing the road now?

I looked on the Maryland State Highways website and here is what they say:

"Upgrade MD 2/4 to a six-lane divided highway from Old Field Lane to Commerce Lane (.78 mile). Proposed improvements include three through lanes in each direction on MD 2/4; double left turn lanes; 20-foot wide raised median; ADA-compliant sidewalks; six-foot wide green space between sidewalks; curbs, drainage improvements, audible/countdown pedestrian signals at intersections."
