Young mathematics experts gather for challenge
SMECO Press Release
Southern Maryland’s young mathematics champions recently faced each other in a competitive test of their knowledge at the 10th annual Elementary Mathematics Challenge competition. The event was held independently in Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary’s counties.

The sponsors were the three counties’ public school systems and Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative (SMECO).

Approximately 730 students from 56 public and private schools participated in the Mathematics Challenge. Each participating school was invited to send a team of fourth-graders and a team of fifth-graders, with up to seven students per team. The first part of the challenge was a multiple-choice test, which students completed individually. The second part of the event was a set of five tasks for each team. Each team placed according to the combined results of both competitions.
