The Calvert County Public Schools Department of Transportation is in the process of evaluating individual school bus routes to ensure compliance with state regulations and local policies governing the number and location of assigned bus stops. When extra bus stops exist, certain stops may be eliminated.
Extra stops by a bus add time to the bus run. This impacts the cost of the bus run, the arrival time at school, the travel time of other drivers on the road, and the amount of fuel that the bus uses.
Leon Langley, Director of Transportation, emphasizes that student safety will be a major consideration when he evaluates bus stops. “In addition to looking at the safety of our students, we will ensure that the number and location of all assigned bus stops meet the requirements of state and local regulations and procedures.â€
Langley is starting the evaluation process by looking at the bus routes of six schools: Calvert Middle; Northern Middle; Calvert High; Huntingtown High; Northern High; and Patuxent High. Bus route evaluations will continue throughout the coming school year.
When bus stops are consolidated, parents of affected students will be notified by letter. No changes will occur prior to August 19, 2008.
