PRINCE FREDERICK, MD - The Calvert County Sheriff’s Office saw an increase during last school year (2007 – 2008) in the number of drivers cited for not stopping for school buses picking up and dropping off children.
The Calvert County Sheriff’s Office wants to remind drivers that school is opening earlier than in previous years and will begin on Wednesday Aug 20. Drivers must stop for school buses with flashing red lights and stop arm extended.
The Sheriff’s Office works closely with the Calvert County Public Schools Department of Transportation and will be investigating complaints from school bus drivers. In addition, Sheriff Mike Evans has instructed deputies to conduct patrols targeting red light runners.
Sheriff Evans stated “School is back in session and we will be conducting speed enforcement in school zones. We want to make sure drivers give their undivided attention to driving so that none of our young people get hurt.”
People who do not stop for school buses are subject to a $570.00 fine.
